CHAPTER 17
Amir hoped Renata would let him in. Her car was parked in the lot below her apartment, indicating she was home. Still, who knew if sheâd see him?
I waited almost a week to reach out. What if she thinks I donât care about her and the baby? He surely hadnât acted like he cared before, but heâd rectify that today.
Relief flooded him as she opened the door. Dressed in a bathrobe and slippers, she looked tired and worn. Concerned, he held out his hand. âRenata. Are you feeling okay?â
âIâm not a hundred percent.â She tugged the door to open it fully, revealing another man standing in her living room.
Amir faceâs folded into a frown. âWhoâs this?â
The smug man shot back, âI could ask the same question!â
Renata, now looking as if she wanted to disappear in a puff of smoke, waved him inside. âJust come in. Join the circus.â
Moments later the three of them stood in the living room. Amir eyed the other man, who eyed him right back. Even without knowing who he was, Amir decided he didnât care for this guy. His vibe didnât sit right with him.
âThis is just what I need today.â Renata flopped down on the couch with an exasperated sigh. âAmir, meet Gary, my ex. Gary, meet Amir.â
âYour ex?â Amir narrowed his eyes at Gary. âThe one who put you through a bad breakup?â
Gary, backing away from Amir, demanded, âHow does he know about that? And how do you even know him?â
âI donât owe you any explanations, Gary.â She propped herself up on a decorative pillow, turning her attention to Amir. âSo, I guess youâre ready to talk, then?â
Walking over to the couch, he crouched and took her hand in his. âIâm ready to do more than that.â
Gary took offense to that, and stalked over to them. âWhat the hell is going on here?â
Amir stiffened. âHold on, playa. I need you to back up.â
âThis is between Ren and I.â Garyâs terse tone indicated his feelings.
For a few moments, tension crackled between the two men.
Finally, Renata snapped, âI think itâs pretty clear that you and I are not getting back together. So why donât you just leave, Gary?â
He bristled. âYou havenât heard me out! I have so much more to sayâ¦â
Garyâs words trailed off into silence as Amir stood to his full height, a good four inches above him.
Amir locked eyes with Gary. âI think youâd better leave, like Renata asked you to. And it would be wise if you didnât come back. Capiche?â
Gary sighed, but said nothing as he walked to the door and let himself out.
After the door closed, Amir turned back to Renata. âHow are you feeling?â
She gave a slight smile as she lay back against the cushion. âLike hell. Morning sickness has started.â
He squeezed her hand. âIâll be here as long as you need me.â
She looked into his eyes. âWhat are you saying, Amir?â
